The goal of data governance is to ensure the highest quality data is collected, used, and made available to key stakeholders through coordinated efforts within the organization. This allows for better community engagement, better decision making, and better use of city resources.
Data Governance is a collection of practices and processes to help to ensure the formal management of data assets within an organization. Data Governance often includes other concepts such as Data Stewardship and Data Quality, which help organizations gain better control over its data assets, including methods, technologies and behaviors. The Data Governance Committee (DGC) oversees the execution of the Data Governance Mission and consists of selected department representatives. The DGC holds meetings quarterly or an ad hoc basis, depending on workload.
The DGC addresses initiative-specific data issues/requirements through the guidelines established by the Strategic Plan, Comprehensive Plan, Open Data Policy and the other initiatives.
