The Hunter Ferrell Landfill Scalehouse and Administration Complex serves as the operational hub for the Irving's waste management services. Equipped with state-of-the-art scales and tracking technology, the scalehouse ensures precise measurement and reporting of waste intake, enhancing efficiency and transparency. On average, the facility processes approximately 300,000 tons of waste annually.
Effective Oct. 1, 2021, the City of Irving’s Solid Waste Services Department assesses tipping fees to all customers using the Hunter Ferrell Landfill for disposal purposes. The tipping fee is $48 per ton and is charged at a rate of $12 for every 500 pounds (quarter-ton).
Irving residents have free access to drop off limited items weighing less than 150 pounds at the Hunter Ferrell Landfill. To access the landfill for free, residents must provide identification (drivers license, state identification card, etc.) and an Irving utility bill with a matching address.
During regular landfill hours, residents can bring the following items for disposal for no additional fee:
Standard landfill fees apply to construction and demolition debris. Leaves, grass clippings, brush, recyclables and other accepted items must be separated and not contain other materials or trash.
Can we put plastic grocery bags, like those used at the checkout to sack our groceries, in our weekly blue recycling bag?
Solid Waste Services does not accept produce, grocery or frozen food bags for recycling.
Plastic grocery bags can be returned to most grocery stores and placed in a container usually located at the entrance of the store.
Is it OK to put food waste in the recycling blue bag, or should we wash plastic containers, such as yogurt containers, before putting them in the blue bag?
Food waste cannot be put in the blue bag.
Food containers should be cleaned and rinsed, such as yogurt, beans, mayonnaise and peanut butter.
Small amounts of liquids remaining from sodas, water, juice, etc., are not a concern.
Can we put styrofoam in the blue bag?
Can food-contaminated paper or styrofoam plates, napkins and paper towels be recycled?
None of these items are recyclable with Irving's blue bag program. The paperboard tubes from paper towels and toilet paper can be recycled, however.
