Investing in Irving's Streets

Launched in 2017, the Road to the Future program is a long-term initiative to rehabilitate, reconstruct and proactively maintain 1,440 lane-miles of Irving’s streets.


A Collaborative Effort

The program brings together the Capital Improvement Program, Traffic and Transportation, and Water Utilities Departments to:

  1. Reconstruct and repair sidewalks, curbs, and gutters.
  2. Replace pavement, water, and wastewater mains and lines.
  3. Repave neighborhood streets and key corridors.


Commitment to Road Maintenance

Resident surveys consistently rank street improvements as a top priority. To address this, the Five-Year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) includes a dedicated revenue source — equal to 1 cent of the property tax rate — to fund street projects.


Additionally, growth in taxable values has increased the city's ability to issue bonds, supporting a $200 million investment in street improvements over 10 years.


Program Impact + Funding

  1. $200 million allocated for road maintenance over 10 years.
  2. $2 million currently budgeted annually for street maintenance.
  3. $800 million estimated annual cost to fully maintain all roadways.


Road Construction Updates
Bridge Closure at Yorkshire Street and Nottingham Drive
The bridge on Yorkshire Street, near Nottingham Drive, has been delayed until Monday, June 16. Yorkshire Street will remain closed through December.
TxDOT Project on SH 356 (Irving Boulevard) Runs Through September
The Texas Department of Transportation's (TxDOT) $7.6 million SH 356 (Irving Boulevard) Rehabilitation Project runs from State Highway (SH) 183 to the eastern limit of Irving.
Esters Road Project: Rainier Street Intersection Closed
The intersection of Esters Road and Rainier Street is closed through early July to install storm water drainage and wastewater sewer systems, and then to repave the intersection.
Esters Road Project: Traffic Pattern Switch
Phase 2 of the $17 million Esters Road Paving and Utility Improvements Project begins Dec. 18.
