Specialized teams, unmatched response – protecting Irving every day.
The Special Operations Division of the Irving Police Department is organized into specialized units, each dedicated to addressing specific public safety challenges.
The Traffic Unit focuses on reducing crashes and fatalities by providing education and enforcement for Irving’s motoring public. This unit is further supported by specialized groups, including the Motorcycle Unit, DWI Unit, Crash Investigations Unit and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, which work together to improve roadway safety.
The Vice/Narcotics Unit investigates crimes involving drugs, prostitution, human trafficking, illegal gambling, child exploitation, and violations related to sexually oriented businesses and alcohol laws. Responsibilities include surveillance, follow-ups, informant development, and search warrant execution. Five officers are also assigned to federal task forces. To report suspected activity, call (972) 721-6965 or email ipdvicnar@cityofirving.org.
The K9 Unit plays a crucial role in supporting multiple sections of the department. Trained dogs assist in detecting narcotics and contraband, apprehending high-risk or violent suspects, tracking operations, conducting building searches, and supporting high-risk traffic stops and search warrants. The unit works closely with Patrol, SWAT, the Fugitive Unit, and the Special Investigations Section to enhance public and officer safety.
The SWAT team is comprised of officers who maintain a high level of operational readiness through continuous specialized training. Their expertise covers a range of skills, including breaching, sniper operations, medical support, and UAS piloting. This team specializes in responding to hostage situations, active attacker scenarios, counter terrorism efforts and other high-threat situations. SWAT team members hold ancillary assignments while continuing to work in their primary roles within the department.
The EOD Unit consists of officers specially trained to render safe and dispose of explosive ordnance, incendiary material, and improvised devices. Members of this unit must successfully complete the FBI Hazardous Device School and deploy various technological platforms to effectively respond to incidents. Like the SWAT team, EOD members carry out their responsibilities as an ancillary assignment alongside their primary duties.
The Crisis Negotiations Team is dedicated to resolving conflicts through peaceful negotiation, with a strong emphasis on preserving human life. The team responds to critical incidents, including hostage situations, barricaded suspects, suicidal individuals and other high-stress scenarios. The CNT Team includes both police officers and departmental mental health professionals and regularly trains and deploys in conjunction with the SWAT team. Members hold ancillary assignments while continuing to serve in their primary capacities within the department.
Together, these specialized units form the backbone of the Special Operations Division, enabling the Irving Police Department to address complex and high-risk situations with precision and professionalism.
