What happens if an emergency occurs and calling 911 isn’t an option? Maybe it’s a case of domestic violence or a home invasion, or perhaps the person is speech impaired. The answer: Text-to-911.

The Irving Police Department offers the Text-to-911 feature when calling is not an option. If necessary, an individual can drafts a text message to 911 with as much information about the emergency as possible. The message should include the following information:

  1. Address where assistance is needed
  2. Description of what is happening
  3. Nearest intersection or cross streets
  4. Type of response that is needed (e.g. Police, Fire or Ambulance)

Once the message is sent, the dispatcher will receive it, reply with any questions and send help. The service does not support video, audio clips or photos, and users can only send messages in English.

Texting 911 should only be used when a phone call isn’t possible because dispatchers often have follow-up questions and need additional details immediately. Waiting for a reply may delay a response.
