The Irving Police Department (IPD) prioritizes building strong relationships with the community through proactive service initiatives and outreach programs. These efforts are designed to improve public trust, provide assistance to those in need, and foster a safer, more connected city.
Crime Prevention
The Crime Prevention Unit plays a vital role in strengthening community relations and enhancing public safety through proactive outreach and engagement. This unit is responsible for a variety of community-focused programs, including Homeless Outreach, which connects individuals in need with essential services; Shop Talk, a partnership-based initiative that builds relationships between officers and local business owners; and Unidos, a program designed to engage and support the Hispanic community. The unit also coordinates National Night Out and other safety-oriented events aimed at fostering trust, communication, and collaboration between the department and the residents we serve. Through these efforts, the Crime Prevention Unit works to create a safer, more connected Irving for all.
Crisis Response Unit (CRU)
The Irving Police Department’s Crisis Response Unit (CRU) is a multidisciplinary team focused on assisting individuals in crisis and preventing recurring incidents related to mental health, substance use, and other behavioral health issues. The unit consists of one sergeant, four specially trained mental health officers, and three certified civilian mental health clinicians. Together, they respond to calls for service, support patrol and other units, and conduct follow-up outreach. The CRU also collaborates with local hospitals, the North Texas Behavioral Health Authority, outpatient clinics, and social service providers to connect individuals with the care and resources they need.
Irving Police Athletic League
The Irving Police Athletic League (PAL), established in 1992 as a nonprofit by police officers and community members, aims to build self-esteem, discipline, and confidence in youth through structured physical fitness and positive mentorship. Open to boys and girls ages 8–18, PAL offers year-round boxing and seasonal wrestling, baseball, and softball programs. Activities are held at the PAL Gym located at 1007 N. O'Connor Road in Irving. Boxing lessons are offered Monday through Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with extended hours during the summer from noon to 8 p.m.
School Resource Officers
The Irving Police School Resource Officer (SRO) Unit is made up of specially trained, veteran officers assigned full-time to schools, operating under the "Triad" concept—as law enforcers, educators, and counselors. As law enforcers, SROs maintain a safe campus environment and handle criminal matters. As educators, they serve as guest instructors teaching law-related topics. As counselors, they provide informal guidance and conflict resolution to students. SROs do not act as disciplinarians; school-related discipline remains the responsibility of school staff. In addition to their campus roles, SROs also manage programs such as Police Explorers, Campus Crime Stoppers, PRIDE, Summer Hoops/Kicks, and the Police Athletic League, and they assist with student-related concerns in the surrounding community.
