Tech 4 U

Technology is everywhere today and it can be frustrating trying to determine where to get help. Tech 4 U brings together the library's tech-related resources to assist with the following:

  1. Set up eBooks and digital media on a personal device.
  2. Take a computer or tech-related class at the library or online.
  3. Make digital creations at the library's makerspaces.
  4. Get personal help with a technology-related issue.

TAKING A COMPUTER OR TECH TOPIC COURSE

Self-Paced Online Classes

DigitalLearn.org is for people who are new to computers or who haven’t used a computer in a long time. For computer users who are a little unsure and uncomfortable or just need a bit of a refresher, this website has short tutorials to help them tackle technology at their own pace and gain the confidence they need to succeed.

LearningExpress Library offers basic classes for computer applications from Adobe, Corel and Microsoft Office. Users can set up a username and password to track their progress.

LinkedIn Learning hosts a constantly growing video library with over 6,000 courses covering business, design, web development and multimedia skills, as well as software applications and computer programming languages. From basic to advanced courses, students can earn certificates of completion they can post to a LinkedIn profile.

In-Person Classes

The library’s appointment-based Tech Help service can provide library patrons with one-on-one tech help catered to their needs.

See the Tech Help page for more information.

The library also sometimes offers group classes on technology-related topics. See the Event Calendar for a list of upcoming classes.

The hotspots program has returned with device availability at all Irving Library locations!

All Irving Public Library cardholders who have been members for 90 days or longer with a card type that allows physical check outs are eligible to borrow a hotspot. Hotspots can support up to 10 internet-connected devices. Below are some important details about the program:

  1. South Irving Library hotspots will continue to require a survey upon check out.
  2. Hotspots check out for 3 weeks. Due to program popularity and device availability, hotspots cannot be renewed.
  3. When a hotspot becomes overdue, it will no longer send the wireless signal, so please don't hold on to overdue devices. Return hotspots on time to keep the waitlist moving. This makes the process faster for everyone! Hotspots can be returned to any Irving Public Library location.
  4. Only 1 hotspot can be checked out at a time. When it is returned, it must go to the next person on the waitlist.
  5. Hotspot holds cannot be placed at multiple locations. The customer must also check out the hotspot at the location for which the hold was placed.

Discovery and Creation at Library Makerspaces

The South Irving Library and Valley Ranch Library feature labs for making digital and real-space items. The West Irving Library’s space is still in the process of opening but offers some STEM classes for children. Usage of the spaces requires an orientation session and signing a user agreement and liability waiver.

Visit the MiY Zone Makerspace page for more details.

Troubleshooting Tips and Tech Help

Need Digital Downloads Help?

Having trouble with a Digital Download service?

Check out the Troubleshooting page for tips or fill out the Digital Downloads Troubleshooting Form and a staff member will be in contact during regular business hours, Monday to Friday, 8 A.M. to 5 P.M.

Need to Schedule Tech Help?

The library’s Tech Help service can help patrons learn basic technology skills such as learning how to use a mouse and keyboard, internet navigation, creating an email or social media account, downloading apps, using Microsoft Office and getting started with library resources. A full list of topics is available on the Tech Help form.

Tech Help is an appointment-based. Request an appointment by filling out the Tech Help appointment form. Library staff can assist with or submit a form on a customer's behalf.

These appointments are educational in nature. Library staff are available in this one-on-one setting to help users understand technology in a customizable format. Staff are available to teach patrons how to do something; not do it for them.

Staff are not able to assist with time sensitive tasks or situations involving malfunctioning devices, software, providing medical or legal advice or advance technology assistance.

Staff will do their best to respond to Tech Help appointment requests within two business days and will schedule a one-hour appointment. In order to allow staff enough time to serve as many people as possible, patrons may make two appointments per month.
