If You Find a Kitten(s) That Appears Abandoned ...

  1. Assess the Situation: Observe the kitten for a few hours to check if the mother returns. The kitten may not be abandoned or lost.
  2. If the mother does not return or is not observed nearby, proceed to Step 2.
  3. Do Not Leave the Kitten Outside: If you are sure the kitten is abandoned, bring it indoors immediately to protect it from harm.
  4. Check the Kitten’s Health: Look for signs of injury, dehydration or malnutrition so you can relay this information to Irving Animal Services or a veterinarian.
  5. Irving Animal Services' operating hours are 1 to 6 p.m., Tuesday-Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and can be reached at (972) 721-2256.
  6. Keep the Kitten Warm: Gently warm the kitten using a towel or heated pad, especially if it feels cold.
  7. Contact Animal Rescues or Animal Shelters: If you are unsure how to care for the kitten, contact local rescues or shelters for care and/or advice.
  8. Feeding the Kitten (If Comfortable with Bottle Feeding): Visit Irving Animal Services for supplies and instructions on how to properly feed the kitten.
  9. Provide a Safe Space: Place the kitten in a quiet, safe area away from pets, children or other distractions.
  10. Follow Up:
  11. Track the kitten’s progress and weight. Irving Animal Services can provide charts for tracking.
  12. Continue to seek help from a veterinarian, animal shelter or rescue if needed.
